Training courses are conducted by WTR’s Industrial Hygienist and Environmental Technicians who are registered with the Department of Environmental Quality and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Asbestos Contractor / Supervisor Initial- 40 Hours
Course is intended for environmental remediation persons training to become the "Competent Person" or Supervisor on an asbestos abatement project. Includes comprehensive knowledge of asbestos history, health effects, asbestos-related illnesses, safety, heat stress, hypothermia, and first aid. Students learn about abatement project design, critical barriers, decontamination systems; construction, maintenance, trouble-shooting of negative pressure containments; asbestos abatement methods (i.e., gross removal, glove-bagging, mini-enclosures); respiratory protection (half and full facemasks, supplied air and SCBA systems); state and federal rules and regulations, insurance, liability, and supervisory techniques. Training includes use of manometers for documenting containment air differentials; determining negative exposure assessments, and worker exposure to Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) exposure limits. The course combines lecture, PowerPoint presentations and hands-on practical exercises to reinforce what students have learned.
Asbestos Inspector Initial - 24 Hours
Course prepares individuals to perform asbestos inspections in a variety of buildings. Inspections are completed prior to building renovations and demolitions. Inspectors collect bulk samples, ship samples to a laboratory for analysis, interpret results, and prepare reports in compliance with federal and state regulations. Course includes the history and health effects of asbestos exposure, dose response, asbestos induced illnesses, latency period, state and federal rules and regulations, insurance, liability, first aid, and safety concerns associated with handling asbestos. Includes a working knowledge of wood and metal frame building systems, history of building technology from 1800s-2000s, use of respirators for inspection activities; interpretation of lab results and report preparation. The course combines lecture, PowerPoint and interactive exercises to practice what students have learned.
Annual Contractor / Supervisor Refresher - 8 Hours
The annual refresher course is required to update Asbestos Contractor / Supervisors on current local, state, and federal regulations, work practices and procedures. The refresher course is required for compliance with the Montana Department of Environmental Quality Asbestos Control Program.
Asbestos Inspector Refresher - 4 Hours
The annual refresher course is required to update Asbestos Inspectors on current local, state, and federal regulations, work practices and procedures. The refresher course is required for compliance with the Montana Department of Environmental Quality Asbestos Control Program.
Lead
Lead Renovation, Repair, and Painting (RRP) Initial - 8 Hours
Course was developed by the U.S Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to train renovation, repair, and painting contractors how to work safely in housing with lead-based paint and comply with EPA’s Renovation, Repair, and Painting (RRP) Rule, and HUD’s Lead Safe Housing Rule. This course is aimed toward renovators, remodelers, painters, maintenance personnel, and any other workers removing or modifying painted surfaces. These persons will take the course to obtain EPA certification as a Certified Renovator, which will enhance their credentials as private contractors and also satisfy HUD requirements for interim controls training in Federally-assisted target housing. The course combines lecture, PowerPoint and interactive exercises to practice what students have learned.
Meth
Meth Lab Clean-up Contractor Initial - 16 Hours
Certified contractors provide inspections to test properties for meth contamination and perform decontamination (or clean up) of contaminated properties. Students learn about history of meth, identification of meth labs, constituent chemicals associated with meth manufacture, first aid & safety, law enforcement precautions, and federal and state regulations. Class includes: visual and analytical sampling methods and analytical test methods; use of alternative wipe sampling protocols; sample quantities, locations and methodology for characterizing a structure; discrete and composite wipe sampling techniques; cleaning and abatement techniques, encapsulation, removal and disposal of appliances, debris, awareness of sharps and blood-borne pathogens, personal protective equipment including respiratory protection; containment; sampling septic and sewer systems; state regulations governing cleanup of seized meth properties in Montana; and differences between listed and non-listed properties. The course combines lecture, PowerPoint and interactive exercises to practice what students have learned.
Requirements: 40-hour HAZWOPER and OSHA 8-Hour Site Supervisor are recommended for this course and required for state certification.
Meth Lab Clean-up Contractor Refresher - 8 Hours
The refresher course is required to update Meth Contractors on current local, state, and federal regulations, work practices and procedures. The refresher course must be completed every two (2) years to remain in compliance with the Montana Department of Environmental Quality Meth Clean-up Program.
